NORTHAW ACTION GROUP has been set up by a group of local residents to try and curtail the activities of Chas Storer and Wood Green Timber Yard. These businesses would not be permitted to operate in the area in the way they are if they applied for planning permission today. This is green belt land.
They are operating under "Grandfather's rights" law where because the sites were used historically to carry out eg recycling activities they are allowed to continue. So many years ago Chas Storer was basically a hut in a field where local scouts would take small piles of local newspapers to be recycled. Now it is a multi million pound recycling business with many articulated lorries visiting the site daily. (Another example of Grandfathers rights are the arguments going on in Brexit at the moment - for example the French are arguing that because their grandfathers fished on UK waters in small wooden boats, they still have the right to use huge mechanical trawlers in these same waters, which are picking up many many multiples of the fish that their grandfathers were !)
We appreciate that this is an ongoing business which is trying to expand year on year, however it is having a detrimental effect on residents - traffic jams, diesel fumes, ruining our green belt. Children and residents feel unsafe walking along the paths here, these queues are making residents late for work / school and medical appointments. We are flummoxed as to how this public nuisance is allowed to persist and grow year on year. This is why Northaw Action Group has supported this site if it wishes to change over to housing. Sadly at the moment we feel the site just wishes to continue to expand, but we are bringing this to your awareness so you can join us in our fight.
